How to Turn Worries into Possibilities (in 3 Minutes)

Here are two quick processes to do if you’re worrying a lot lately. I used to worry a lot. I thought that sensible people worried, and that this prevented bad things happening.

But the truth is, worrying can actually attract bad things to you. As the old saying goes…what you focus on grows. To that end, here are 2 quick techniques to turn worry around….

Number 1: The Good Conversation Starter

Here’s the first one highlighted in this short video

Number 2:  The “What if’s” Game

To do this second one, take a piece of paper and write down 3 worries starting with the words “What if…” For example, here are some popular ones:

  1. What if I can’t pay my bills?
  2. What if my presentation bombs?
  3. What if asteroids destroy the planet?

Now, write out three opposite statements also starting with “What if…”

  1. What if I can easily pay my bills all the time?
  2. What if my presentation is a huge success?
  3. What if the earth stays safe for another billion years?

Why do this? It gives your creative mind something positive to do. If you’re not giving your mind regular outlets for creativity, it builds up and can become destructivity.

This process is different from an affirmation where you might say “I am healthy”. If you are lying there feeling sick it can be hard to suspend disbelief. In this scenario you are just imagining another possibility. You’re not trying to convince yourself it’s true. It’s easier for the mind to accept.

Albert Einstein once said, “Imagination is the preview to life’s coming attractions.” If that’s true, it serves to use your imagination to create what you want, instead of what you don’t want.

By the way, this isn’t about being a Pollyanna and ignoring problems. However, many of the things we worry about our silly or unlikely. Take action to solve problems but avoid ruminating on them. Once you start taking action you’ll notice worry dissipates anyway.

In summary: Good things you want in life are like seedlings in your garden that need water, fertilizer and sun. This is done by regularly focusing your attention on those possibilities. Whereas, worrying is like watering and fertilizing the weeds—it just doesn’t make much sense.  Try it and let me know how it goes.
